KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – A Russian drone strike on a home in northern Ukraine resulted in the tragic deaths of a 29-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son, as reported by officials. This incident occurred shortly after the United Nations highlighted that July was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since the initial weeks following Russia's all-out invasion more than four years ago.

According to the U.N. monitoring mission in Kyiv, at least 437 civilians were killed and 2,610 were wounded in July 2023. This figure represents a stunning 70% increase compared to July the previous year and a 30% rise from June 2023. Overall, since the invasion began on February 24, 2022, U.N. human rights monitors estimate that the war has claimed the lives of at least 16,874 civilians, including 820 children, while injuring 51,273 individuals, with 3,126 being children.

Danielle Bell, head of the U.N. human rights monitoring mission in Kyiv, stated, “Every month this year, the number of killed and injured civilians has increased. That trend accelerated sharply in July.” She noted that the number of civilian casualties in July was the highest documented in a single month since March 2022.

The Russian drone strike in the Sumy region of northern Ukraine early on Friday also left four other individuals injured, including the boy's father and grandmother, who were hospitalized with severe burns, as confirmed by Oleh Hryhorov, the regional military administration chief.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned that Moscow plans to intensify its aerial attacks on Ukraine, indicating that the country will employ "much harsher methods" to target everything that supports Kyiv's military efforts from Western nations. Lavrov made these comments during an interview with Russian state television aired on Friday, amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts by the U.S. to resolve the conflict.

In related developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that a glide bomb strike in the eastern Donetsk region demolished six floors of a 10-story apartment building, resulting in one death and 16 injuries. Zelenskyy reported that Russian forces are launching approximately 220 glide bombs daily against settlements near the frontline in eastern and southern Ukraine.

Furthermore, Moscow claimed that its drones had attacked two tugboats in the Black Sea, which were escorting cargo ships carrying Western military aid for Ukraine, in addition to hitting a railway station in the southern port of Izmail used for transporting military supplies and fuel.

In retaliation, Ukrainian forces have expanded their long-range strike campaign against Russian infrastructure, targeting the Ust-Luga port in the Leningrad region north of Moscow—one of Russia's key oil and gas export terminals positioned more than 800 kilometers (500 miles) from Ukraine. This port has been a regular target of Ukrainian drone strikes aimed at undermining Russian oil exports, crucial for funding its military operations.

Additionally, Ukraine has attacked a warehouse of Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, which Kyiv accuses of supplying the Russian military. The strike resulted in "insignificant damage," and the goods stored were reportedly unharmed.

The Russian Defense Ministry asserted that their air defenses intercepted 553 Ukrainian drones over multiple regions, including occupied Crimea and the Black Sea, while NATO warplanes shot down a drone entering Latvian airspace, attributed to Russian electronic warfare tactics.

Latvian officials did not disclose the drone's origin but suggested it was likely a Ukrainian drone that strayed off course. Following the incident, residents in five municipalities in eastern Latvia were advised to seek shelter for their safety. Another drone was discovered crashing in Romania near the Ukrainian border, prompting local defense officials to deploy a specialized team to secure the area.

As the situation continues to evolve, the impacts of the ongoing conflict and the escalating military actions on both sides remain a pressing concern for civilians caught in this intense struggle.
