TUMBLER RIDGE — Demolition has begun at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in northern British Columbia, following a tragic mass shooting that claimed eight lives earlier this year. This event, which occurred on February 10, involved 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar who took the lives of her mother and brother at their family home before proceeding to the school, where five children and an educational assistant were also killed. The shooting ended with Van Rootselaar taking her own life as police closed in.
Images shared on social media depict excavators dismantling the structure, ripping into the walls and exposing pink insulation, while piles of scrap metal gather beside the school. The demolition signifies a significant emotional step for the community, which has been deeply affected by the tragedy.
The decision to demolish the school follows pledges of funding from both the provincial and federal governments for the development of a new secondary school at a different location. In a joint press release issued on May 7, the governments revealed that the Peace River South School Board had requested assistance, following consultations with victims’ families, community members, and experts. The release emphasized the importance of quickly and sensitively removing the current school in a trauma-informed manner, highlighting the community's need for healing.
Stu Bell, a former student of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and now a parent of teenagers in the area, shared his sentiments regarding the demolition on social media. He expressed a "massive amount of relief," stating, "The building must go." His comments reflect the feelings of many within the community who see the removal of the school as a necessary step towards moving on from the traumatic events that took place there.
The mass shooting has left a lasting impact on the Tumbler Ridge community, with families and individuals still grappling with the aftermath. As the physical structure of the school comes down, conversations surrounding the establishment of a new, safer learning environment are gaining momentum, driven by the collective desire for a fresh start and a space that fosters healing and recovery.
This demolition marks not only the end of a location tied to unimaginable loss but also the beginning of a new chapter for the students and residents of Tumbler Ridge. As the community looks forward to the construction of a new secondary school, there is hope that this new building will symbolize resilience, strength, and the commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of future generations.
