The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) is making significant changes to its championship format following an unfortunate incident during the first game of the series. The championship series was initially planned as a three-game showdown between the Winnipeg Sea Bears and the Brampton Honey Badgers. However, the opening match, held on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at Brampton’s CAA Centre, was suspended early in the first period due to unsafe court conditions caused by condensation.

According to a statement from the league, after thorough consultations with players from both teams, game officials, and venue staff, it was determined that the playing surface was not safe for competition. As a result, the decision was made to cancel the game. Shortly thereafter, the CEBL announced that the championship will now be decided in a single game, set to take place in Winnipeg on Saturday, September 30, 2023.

The decision to revert to a single-game format marks a shift from the league's recent plans for a best-of-three series. The league indicated that due to time constraints, the three-game series could not be completed within the allocated schedule. This format mirrors the earlier championship structure used from 2019 to 2025, where a single game determined the league champion.

Originally, Saturday's contest was supposed to be Game 2 of the series, with the possibility of a Game 3 occurring in Winnipeg on Sunday, October 1, only if necessary. Both teams are eager for victory, with the Sea Bears seeking their first CEBL title, while the Honey Badgers aim for their second championship in just four seasons.

The Winnipeg Sea Bears have had a strong postseason run, starting with a decisive 99-88 victory over the Saskatoon Mamba during the Western Conference semifinal. The Mamba had entered the game with six wins in their last seven outings. The Sea Bears, seeded second in the Western Conference, continued their impressive form by upsetting the top-ranked Vancouver Bandits with a score of 107-96 in the West final. The Bandits had previously finished first in the conference after defeating the Sea Bears on the last weekend of the regular season and were heavily favored to win.

On the other side, the Brampton Honey Badgers concluded their regular season in second place in the Eastern Conference with an 11-13 record. They successfully advanced to the finals by defeating the Ottawa BlackJacks in the East semifinal and narrowly escaping the reigning back-to-back CEBL champions, the Niagara River Lions, in the conference final. The River Lions had earlier eliminated the 2023 champion Scarborough Shooting Stars, who finished the regular season with the best league record at 20-4.

Historically, the Honey Badgers have had the upper hand against the Sea Bears this season, winning both of their encounters. The first matchup concluded with a tight 96-92 victory for Brampton on May 25, while the second game saw them edge out Winnipeg again with an 88-86 win on July 25.

As the teams prepare for the decisive championship game in Winnipeg, all eyes will be on how the Sea Bears will respond to the previous defeats and whether they can capitalize on home-court advantage to secure their first title against the experienced Honey Badgers.
