On Wednesday, the 18th annual Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards took place, honoring a diverse group of individuals, including television personalities, a soccer legend, a stand-up comedian, and community champions. These awards recognize the remarkable success stories of immigrants across Canada, showcasing their significant contributions to the nation's economy, innovation, arts, and community development.

Among the distinguished award recipients is Cameron Bailey, the CEO of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Bailey, who immigrated from Barbados at the age of seven, reflected on his journey and the feelings of being an outsider. "I think that’s a strength," he shared in an interview with OMNI News. He recounted his early experiences of facing discrimination and having to acclimatize to a new culture. However, over time, Bailey has embraced his multicultural identity, stating that having roots in multiple cultures and feeling at home globally is a true asset.

This year’s Entrepreneur Award was presented to Shivani Dhamija, an immigrant from India who settled in Halifax in 2011. Dhamija established Shivani's Kitchen, a successful food manufacturing business that has surpassed $1.5 million in sales, earning her the title of the "Spice Queen of Atlantic Canada." She addressed the many challenges she encountered as a newcomer and encouraged young immigrants who might be uncertain about their decision to move to a new country. "You’ve already solved one problem by coming to a different country," she advised. Dhamija emphasized the importance of overcoming shyness and actively seeking answers, reminding her peers that "no question is a silly question" in the journey of adaptation and growth.

Also honored this year was Hazel Mae, a broadcaster for Rogers Sportsnet and a fashion designer who immigrated from the Philippines. Former professional soccer player and coach Carl Valentine was another notable recipient among this esteemed group of award winners. Their successes highlight the diverse talents and contributions of immigrants in various fields across Canada.

The Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards celebrate the resilience and achievements of immigrants who have made significant impacts in their communities. The award winners, selected through a thorough nomination and judging process, bring inspiring narratives that exemplify the positive influence of immigrant contributions on Canadian society.
