WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) – William Stevenson, the former husband of Jill Biden, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering his current wife, Linda Stevenson. The charges were brought against the 77-year-old Stevenson after police discovered Linda unresponsive at their Wilmington home on December 28. A Delaware state grand jury subsequently indicted Stevenson on murder charges this month.

Stevenson has been in custody since being charged with the crime on February 3, unable to post bail set at $2 million. During a court hearing held on Tuesday, Stevenson appeared via remote video. His attorney, a public defender, did not provide immediate comments regarding the case. A subsequent court hearing has been scheduled for March 16.

William Stevenson was married to Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975 before she remarried U.S. Senator Joe Biden in 1977, who later served as the President of the United States from January 2021 to January 2025. Throughout his career, Stevenson is noted for founding the Stone Balloon, a renowned music venue in Newark, Delaware, during the early 1970s.

Linda Stevenson, age 64, worked as a bookkeeper and was remembered in her obituary as a family-oriented individual who enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Described by her family as a devoted mother and grandmother, she was an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan. Interestingly, her obituary does not include any mention of her husband, William Stevenson.

The emotional impact of Linda's death was highlighted by her daughter, Christine Mae, who shared her grief on social media, stating that "one hug from her and all your worries would disappear." She expressed the profound pain of losing her mother, describing the emptiness in her heart as "an abyss."

As the legal proceedings unfold, Jill Biden's spokesperson has stated that she has no comment on the ongoing case involving her former husband. The heightened media attention surrounding this incident brings to light both the tragedy of Linda Stevenson's death and the complex personal history involving high-profile figures in American politics.
