A man from Toronto faces charges for public incitement of hatred following an incident during a demonstration in North York. The accused, identified as 33-year-old Muhammad Anas Sial, allegedly displayed an antisemitic sign during the protest held at the intersection of Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue West on March 15, 2026, around 1:15 p.m.

According to police reports, Sial was one of several individuals who showcased antisemitic messages while participating in the demonstration. Eyewitnesses claimed that he marched toward a group of pro-Israeli supporters while shouting derogatory slurs. This conduct raised significant concerns regarding public safety and incited hate, prompting a response from law enforcement.

On April 2, members of the Hate Crime Unit executed a search warrant, leading to Sial's arrest. The Toronto Police reported that they carried out additional search warrants at multiple residences and a storage unit in the city, seizing not only the antisemitic signs displayed during the protest but also other crucial evidence. These included a number of phones and laptops belonging to suspects and persons of interest linked to the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities examine the circumstances surrounding the demonstration and the actions of those involved. Police have stated that the behavior observed on March 15, along with other contributing factors, represented an escalation of hostility that posed a clear risk to public safety.

In response to the heightened tensions and associated risks, the Toronto Police Service has put in place an operational ban. This restriction aims to prevent demonstrators from entering residential streets in the Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue West area, which has been characterized as a precautionary measure to ensure safety for local residents amid escalating demonstrations.
