FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - A tragic incident occurred on Sunday in northern Germany, where three individuals lost their lives, including a 10-month-old girl, when a tree was uprooted by high winds during an Easter egg hunt. The accident took place around 11 a.m. in the woods near the town of Satrupholm, where approximately 50 participants from a local residential facility for new mothers, pregnant women, and children were gathered for the holiday celebration.
The police report stated that a 30-meter (100-foot) tree fell on the group, resulting in four people being trapped beneath its massive trunk. First responders arrived on the scene promptly; however, a 21-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl were pronounced dead at the site of the accident. Tragically, the 10-month-old daughter of the young woman succumbed to her injuries later at the hospital. Additionally, an 18-year-old woman sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital for further treatment.
The residential facility involved is a state-funded institution dedicated to supporting pregnant women and new mothers requiring assistance. In the aftermath of the incident, grief counselors were dispatched to the area to provide support to the affected families and individuals present during the distressing event.
Photographs released by the Bild news site illustrate the chaotic scene, with several Easter eggs strewn across the ground and two of the deceased victims covered with white sheets. The area had been under a high winds warning at the time of the incident, raising concerns about safety precautions for outdoor activities.
Government officials from the Schleswig-Holstein region expressed their deep sorrow over the tragic event. A joint statement from Regional Governor Daniel Günther, Interior Minister Magdalena Finke, and Youth and Families Minister Aminata Touré conveyed their condolences, stating, "Our thoughts are with the family members of the dead, with the injured, and with everyone who had to experience this terrible occurrence."
