WEST GLACIER, Mont. (AP) — The body of a hiker who had been missing has been discovered in Glacier National Park, marking a tragic event as authorities believe this incident may represent the first deadly bear attack in the park since 1998. The victim, identified as Anthony Pollio, a 33-year-old resident of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was reported missing on Sunday.
According to a statement released by the National Park Service, the injuries found on Pollio’s body align with those typically associated with a bear encounter. Officials noted, “Wildlife and law enforcement personnel are currently assessing the area for bear activity and any ongoing public safety concerns.”
The hiker’s remains were located on Wednesday approximately 50 feet (15 meters) away from the Mt. Brown Trail, an area characterized by dense woods. Subsequent to this discovery, designated trails leading from Lake McDonald Lodge were temporarily closed as authorities launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Pollio's death.
Glacier National Park is known to be home to both grizzly bears and black bears. Previous incidents involving bears have occurred in the park; for instance, last August, a bear injured a 34-year-old hiker by swatting at her, resulting in shoulder and arm injuries. The park service indicated that this bear had been accompanied by two cubs and acted defensively, suggesting that it was likely startled by the hiker.
