Officials in Brampton, a city in Ontario, have announced the closure of Chinguacousy Park on the last day of the long weekend, specifically on Victoria Day. The decision comes in response to "large, unsafe gatherings and use of fireworks" that have raised concerns about public safety.
Peel Regional Police (PRP) made the announcement via a social media post shared shortly before 8 p.m. They emphasized that the park is closed "effective immediately," directing all individuals within the park to leave the premises. This swift action highlights the authorities' efforts to manage safety concerns associated with the unruly behavior of some park-goers.
Following the closure announcement, PRP provided an update around 11 p.m., indicating that crowds had mostly dispersed. However, they decided to keep some police resources in the area to monitor the situation, ensuring that any potential for further disturbances was minimized.
Chinguacousy Park, a 40-acre recreation area located in the heart of Brampton near the intersection of Bramalea Road and Queen Street East, is popular among locals, especially during national holidays. The park is known for hosting significant events, including a large fireworks display on occasions like Canada Day. However, in recent years, the park has faced challenges with unruly crowds. Some young individuals have been reported to engage in dangerous behaviors, such as shooting fireworks towards each other and bystanders, prompting city officials to take decisive action.
In response to ongoing safety issues, Brampton officials approved a year-round ban on the personal sale, use, and possession of fireworks in 2022. This legislative measure was implemented to safeguard residents and mitigate risks associated with fireworks-related incidents, particularly in public spaces like Chinguacousy Park.
