The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers from the Highway Safety Division have reopened the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 at James Snow Parkway in Milton following a multi-vehicle collision that occurred on Monday. The accident resulted in one individual being hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, the incident transpired when a vehicle traveling east attempted to merge into the express lanes but crashed into the entry cushion that separates the collector and express lanes. This impact caused the vehicle to lose control and collide with an eastbound tractor-trailer.

There were two occupants in the vehicle involved; the driver sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and was subsequently transported to the hospital, while the passenger suffered only minor injuries.

Sgt. Schmidt also indicated that there were reports of aggressive driving prior to the crash, but noted that the investigation into the incident is still ongoing. In total, four vehicles were involved in this collision, which occurred just before 5 p.m.

According to a post made by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation on their 511 social media account at approximately 11:10 p.m., the highway lanes had been cleared and normal traffic resumed.

This incident highlights the potential dangers on busy highways, particularly during peak hours. The involvement of aggressive driving raises concerns regarding driver behavior and the importance of road safety measures, particularly in high-traffic areas like Highway 401.

As the investigation continues, authorities are likely to evaluate not only the circumstances surrounding the collision but also potential contributing factors such as speeding or reckless driving, particularly given the reports leading up to the incident.
