Toronto police have announced the arrest of a 58-year-old man, Abdulkadir Al-Jelani, in connection with an investigation into a suspected hate-motivated assault. The incident, which took place on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, around 12:10 p.m., occurred in the vicinity of Jane Street and Lawrence Avenue West. According to the police statement, the suspect approached the victim in an unprovoked manner, leading to a disturbing encounter.

During the confrontation, Al-Jelani allegedly shouted anti-Israeli slurs and directed death threats towards the victim. Police reports indicate that, in addition to verbal abuse, the suspect picked up rocks and various items from the street and threw them at the victim, causing minor physical injuries.

Investigators noted that the victim was potentially targeted due to their religious attire, suggesting that this incident was motivated by hate. As a result of the findings, Abdulkadir Al-Jelani was charged with three counts of assault with a weapon and one count of uttering death threats. Following his arrest, he was scheduled to appear in court in Toronto on the morning of June 30, 2026.
