Fans Bid Farewell to Bonnie Tyler in Welsh Village

LONDON (AP) - A touching farewell took place on Saturday as hundreds of fans gathered in the seaside village of Mumbles, Wales, to pay their respects to the late singer Bonnie Tyler. Her coffin was transported back home, draped in a Welsh flag, stirring deep emotions among the attendees.

Bonnie Tyler, the Grammy-nominated pop star famously known for her iconic 1983 ballad "Total Eclipse of the Heart," passed away last month at the age of 75 in a hospital in Portugal. She had been hospitalized in May for emergency intestinal surgery in Faro, where she resided.

Fans and locals from throughout the United Kingdom converged on the streets of Mumbles to witness the hearse carrying Tyler's coffin. Many had gathered outside her former residence, leaving an array of floral tributes in her memory. One 18-year-old fan, Carys Edwards, expressed the collective sentiment, stating, "She was always coming home and making sure that she came back to her fans in Wales. Her songs really did touch a lot of people here in Wales; we loved her a lot."

Born as Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler grew up in public housing as the daughter of a coal miner in Skewen, a town located approximately 7 miles (11 kilometers) from Swansea, Wales. She was raised alongside three sisters and two brothers, and her humble beginnings shaped her into a beloved figure in the music industry.

Throughout her illustrious career, Tyler garnered three Grammy nominations and represented Britain at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, finishing in 19th place. In recognition of her contributions to music, she was appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, primarily celebrated for her classic hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart."

"Total Eclipse of the Heart" reached number one on charts in both Britain and the United States. The song has since racked up over 1 billion streams, experiencing a resurgence during eclipses in 2017 and 2024, with renewed interest reignited by the recent solar eclipse.

In addition to her timeless hits, Tyler is also celebrated for other popular songs like "It's a Heartache" and "Holding Out for a Hero," the latter of which was featured in the soundtrack for the 1984 film "Footloose."

A private celebration of Bonnie Tyler's life is scheduled for Monday at a church in Swansea, attended by family and friends. Following the service, her coffin will take a final journey through her hometown of Skewen, symbolizing a poignant return to her roots.
