This weekend, two contrasting dinosaur-themed movies made their debut at the North American box office, yet neither was able to dethrone "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which remains firmly at the top for the third consecutive weekend. "The Odyssey" also retained its place in the rankings, comfortably occupying the second position.

The films "Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie" and "The End of Oak Street" were in competition for third place in their respective openings. "The End of Oak Street," a PG-13 action film featuring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, managed to outperform the animated "Paw Patrol" by a narrow margin, with a projected gross of $21 million compared to the latter's $20.5 million, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.

Despite their performance, both films were far behind "Spider-Man: Brand New Day." The Sony Pictures release added another impressive $70 million to its domestic total, now standing at $785.8 million, making it the fourth-highest domestic release ever. Globally, it has crossed the $2 billion mark, becoming only the eighth film to achieve this milestone without adjusting for inflation, and the second fastest to do so, just behind "Avengers: Endgame," which reached the figure in 11 days. "Brand New Day" accomplished this feat in approximately 18 days.

"The Odyssey," a Christopher Nolan epic now in its fifth week of release, held onto second place with an estimated $23.2 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic total to $504.7 million. Its international earnings totaled $98 million, bolstered by a strong debut of $36.6 million in China, pushing its global earnings past the $1.2 billion threshold.

"The End of Oak Street" exceeded projections with approximately $21 million from 3,446 locations across North America. Worldwide, it garnered $47 million, despite a production budget reported at $80 million. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the film follows suburban parents, played by McGregor and Hathaway, whose neighborhood is mysteriously transported to prehistoric times. While critics praised the film, giving it an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audience reception was mixed, as reflected by a B CinemaScore, with over half of the viewers indicating they would probably recommend it.

Family audiences flocked to "Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie," released in 3,545 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. The film, rated PG and the third installment in the "Paw Patrol" franchise, earned an A CinemaScore from viewers and has accumulated a worldwide total of $69 million since its opening.

The documentary "Katseye: Wild Hearts" rounded out the top five with a modest $4 million from just 724 theaters. Several other newcomers also found their way into the top ten: "Six: The Musical Live," which debuted in sixth place with $3 million, followed by "The Brink of War" at $2.7 million, and the Tamil-language film "Vishwanath & Sons," which made $1.6 million to take the tenth spot.

The crime thriller "The Rivals of Amziah King" featuring Matthew McConaughey fell outside the top ten, earning slightly over $1 million from 632 theaters. The biopic "Tony," focusing on young Anthony Bourdain, garnered $706,676 in its second weekend, with plans for expansion in the near future.

Overall, the box office remains robust as the summer season comes to a close, totaling over $4.2 billion in ticket sales, about 5.7% higher than the summer of 2019 before the pandemic. Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, mentioned that the current figures are only approximately $130 million shy of matching the record summer of 2013, which featured hits like "Iron Man 3" and "Despicable Me 2." While this summer might not surpass 2013, Dergarabedian noted that it is still expected to rank among the top five summers of all time, with the overall year nearing $6.9 billion in box office revenue.
