On Wednesday night, Kiki Iriafen starred for the Washington Mystics, scoring 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in a decisive 93-82 victory over the Toronto Tempo. This win marked the Mystics' eighth consecutive home victory, showcasing their dominance on their own court.
Both Iriafen and Shakira Austin made significant contributions to the game. Austin added a solid performance with 11 points and 10 rebounds, earning her 16th double-double of the season. Iriafen's efficient shooting, hitting 8 of 12 attempts from the field, complemented the team's overall effort as they out-rebounded the Tempo 43-27.
Michaela Onyenwere also shone for Washington, contributing 14 points with four successful three-pointers. Sonia Citron played a key role by scoring 13 points and dishing out six assists. The Mystics demonstrated their power in the paint, scoring 38 points in that area and narrowly missing their goal of achieving 40-plus points for the 12th consecutive game.
The Toronto Tempo faced significant challenges during the game, missing their top three scorers—Marina Mabrey, Brittney Sykes, and Nyara Sabally—who were sitting out the second game of a back-to-back. Despite these absences, Kiki Rice led the Tempo’s efforts with 19 points. Aneesah Morrow added 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds, but it wasn't enough, as Toronto succumbed to their 12th consecutive loss.
Unfortunately for the Tempo, the defeat also meant they were officially eliminated from playoff contention. The Mystics took advantage of the Tempo's struggles, beginning the second quarter with a commanding 12-0 run to establish a 37-24 lead. The Tempo missed their first five shots of the quarter, allowing Washington to outscore them 22-9 in the second period, providing the Mystics with a comfortable 47-33 advantage at halftime.
As the game progressed into the third quarter, Onyenwere's back-to-back three-pointers highlighted a mid-quarter surge that extended Washington’s lead to 60-42. This offensive uprising exemplified the Mystics' ability to capitalize on their opponent's weaknesses, further sealing the fate of the Tempo as they struggled for answers.
The Mystics’ impressive performance was bolstered by their strong teamwork and strategic execution, making it evident that they are a formidable force as the season approaches its final stretch. Meanwhile, the Tempo's challenges emphasize the growing pains of a new franchise struggling to find success in the competitive landscape of the WNBA.
