LONDON (AP) — The annual Corgi Derby took place at Musselburgh Racecourse in Scotland, showcasing some of the fastest canines on short legs. This whimsical event was initiated in 2022 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's remarkable 70-year reign. A lifelong corgi enthusiast, the late monarch owned nearly 30 corgis, along with a few dorgis, which are a mix of corgi and dachshund.

On Saturday, during the race held just outside Edinburgh, four-year-old Juno emerged victorious from a competitive field of 16 dogs. The race spanned 230 feet (70 meters), and Juno’s thrilling finish saw her sprint past last year’s champion, Rodney, in the final stretch. Juno's owners, Alisdair Tew and Fran Brandon, were overjoyed with the win and received a trophy and dog treats from Judy Murray, a tennis coach and mother of tennis star Andy Murray.

Reflecting on their preparations, Tew stated that they trained Juno for the event the previous year but opted for a more relaxed approach this time. “This year we just resorted to letting her chase things, particularly seagulls,” he explained, noting that Juno's readiness for treats likely contributed to her success on the track.

The origin of Queen Elizabeth II's affection for corgis dates back to 1933 when her father, King George VI, gifted her a Pembroke Welsh corgi named Dookie. Throughout her life, corgis remained a significant presence, often accompanying the queen on official engagements. They reportedly had their own room at Buckingham Palace and were known for their cheeky personalities, sometimes playfully nipping at the heels of visitors or family members.

In a notable cultural moment, three corgis appeared alongside Queen Elizabeth in a humorous 2012 video, where she climbed into James Bond’s helicopter, showcasing her fondness for the breed to a global audience during the London Olympics.

The Corgi Derby continues to be a delightful highlight on the Scottish events calendar, celebrating not just a beloved dog breed but also honoring the legacy of a monarch who shared a deep bond with these cheerful companions. The event not only serves as entertainment but also reflects the joy and camaraderie within the community, as both dog owners and spectators revel in the spirited competition of these charming canines.
