On Monday morning, a shooting incident took place in a home located in Richmond Hill, resulting in one person being injured. The incident occurred shortly after 7 a.m. in the Yonge Street and Weldrick Road West area, as reported by York Regional Police.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found a victim within the home. The individual was subsequently transported to a hospital, where they are expected to recover from non-life-threatening injuries. As of now, the identity of the injured party has not been disclosed.
Authorities suspect that more than one suspect was involved in the shooting, which they believe was connected to a home invasion. Following the incident, the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, prompting an immediate and significant police response.
The home involved in the shooting belongs to a family of four, which includes two young children. CityNews communicated with the homeowners, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirming that they and their children were thankfully unharmed during the incident.
In the vicinity, neighbors reported that the residence was known to have rooms rented out to tenants. However, police did not provide any additional information regarding the victim or any potential tenants who may have been present at the time of the shooting.
Afarin Maleki, a local resident, described hearing shouting from the direction of the home where the shooting occurred. She observed a large police presence at the scene, estimating that approximately 20 police cruisers and numerous officers were involved in the response. "I heard the sirens; it was very out of character for our neighborhood," Maleki noted. "It's typically very quiet, very safe, very family-oriented. So that was very concerning."
This shooting incident comes shortly after another home invasion and shooting that occurred only a 10-minute drive away in the Leslie Street and William F. Bell Parkway area, where a person was shot in the leg.
Another neighbor, Ray Pehroozian, expressed his concern regarding the safety of his family, stating, "It's scary. I've been here for 26 years; we've never had anything like this. It's alarming." Such sentiments highlight the anxiety felt among residents following the violent events.
In light of the shooting, residents have been informed that there will be a considerable police presence in the area as investigations continue. Uniformed officers are canvassing the neighborhood, searching for potential video evidence and witnesses. The police also advised motorists to avoid the area to facilitate a thorough investigation.
