Toronto police have reported the arrest of a 45-year-old man in connection with an aggravated assault that occurred on a Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) bus last week. The incident left one victim injured and prompted an investigation by law enforcement officials.
The assault took place on October 14, 2023, around 11:54 a.m. in the vicinity of Dufferin Street and Eglinton Avenue West. Officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of the incident, where the victim was allegedly assaulted while aboard a westbound TTC bus.
According to the police's account, the victim was traveling on the bus when the suspect, identified as Yetebarek Woldemichael, boarded at Dufferin Street. After taking a seat behind the victim, Woldemichael allegedly launched an unprovoked attack against the victim. It is reported that the assault was sudden and without any prior interaction or indication of conflict between the two individuals.
The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was promptly transported to a hospital for medical attention following the event. Meanwhile, the suspect fled the area after the attack, which led to subsequent police action.
Following the incident, investigators issued a public appeal for information regarding the assault. This outreach aimed to gather details from the community that might assist in locating the suspect. On October 19, 2023, just five days after the incident, police successfully apprehended Woldemichael, who does not have a fixed address.
Woldemichael faces multiple charges, including assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace, and breaching probation conditions. Authorities have reiterated the seriousness of the charges, given that they involve both weapon use and an attack on an individual in a public setting. These actions have raised concerns regarding public safety on transit systems.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court on October 20, 2023, where he will face these charges formally. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault and are working to ensure that similar incidents do not recur in the future. The swift arrest and ongoing investigation are part of a broader effort by law enforcement to address violence in public spaces, especially on public transit systems.
