Highway 407 in Burlington has been reopened following a temporary closure due to a significant grass fire. The incident caused substantial smoke, which adversely affected visibility on the highway, prompting the response from local authorities.
The Ontario Provincial Police reported that the thick smoke originating from the grass fire was a major factor in the decision to close the highway. The section affected by the closure was from Bronte Road to the Queen Elizabeth Way. The highway was initially closed just after 4 p.m. and remained shut until approximately 5:45 p.m.
In addition to the highway closure, Halton Police, in conjunction with Burlington Fire, responded to several grass fires along the railway tracks. These fires were reported to be in the vicinity of Upper Middle Road and Appleby Line, as well as near Tremaine Road and No 2 Side Road.
Emergency services were dispatched quickly to manage the situation and mitigate any potential danger to the public. The rapid response was essential in preventing further escalation of the fires and ensuring the safety of motorists on Highway 407.
The presence of multiple grass fires in the region raises concerns about fire safety, particularly during dry conditions that can facilitate such incidents. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation, and preventive measures are likely to be assessed in order to avoid similar occurrences in the future.
