THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump is set to experience a royal welcome during his visit to The Hague this week, as he prepares for a summit with the leaders of NATO on Wednesday. His accommodations have been notably upgraded to reflect his status as the leader of the United States.

Trump is scheduled to arrive in the Netherlands on Tuesday night, where he will be escorted by motorcade along designated closed-off highways to the Huis Ten Bosch palace. This historic site, nestled within a forest on the outskirts of The Hague, will host a dinner with other NATO leaders, graciously organized by Dutch King Willem-Alexander.

Initially, Trump had plans to stay at a luxury hotel located in Noordwijk, a town on the Dutch North Sea coast. However, he has accepted King Willem-Alexander’s invitation to spend the night at the official royal residence, marking a significant occasion as it is the first time an American President will utilize the King's palace for overnight accommodations. A White House official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed this unprecedented arrangement.

According to government spokesperson Anna Sophia Posthumus, President Trump will reside at Huis Ten Bosch, home to King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima, and their three daughters. It is noted that the princesses primarily reside elsewhere due to their educational pursuits.

The historic Huis Ten Bosch palace has sections that date back to the 17th century, featuring a Wassenaar Wing, which accommodates the royal family, and a Hague Wing designated for visiting dignitaries. One of the prominent features of the palace is the ornate Orange Hall, which is named in homage to the Dutch Royal House of Orange.

This location is also in proximity to the new U.S. Embassy in the Netherlands, further highlighting the importance of diplomatic relations during Trump's visit.

Trump's interaction with royalty is not a novel experience for him. In 2019, he had a notable visit to Windsor Castle, where he enjoyed tea with Queen Elizabeth II during a rather contentious visit to the United Kingdom.

As the summit approaches, this visit underscores the intricate connections between U.S. leadership and European royalty, setting a unique backdrop for diplomatic discussions among NATO leaders.
