Amazon MGM Studios announced on Wednesday that acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, known for his work on the “Dune” series, will be directing the next James Bond movie. This upcoming, untitled installment marks a significant transition for the iconic franchise, as it will be the first Bond film produced under Amazon's creative leadership following its acquisition of MGM Studios. The studio has taken the reins of the Bond series after decades of oversight by the Broccoli family.

Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman emphasized that they would first develop a screenplay and appoint a director before casting the next actor to portray the iconic character. With Villeneuve at the helm, they have secured one of Hollywood’s most esteemed blockbuster directors, who has recently garnered immense acclaim for his adaptations of Frank Herbert’s “Dune.”

In his statement, the 57-year-old French Canadian director expressed his deep admiration for the Bond franchise, stating that he has been a lifelong fan. “I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory,” said Villeneuve. He acknowledged the weight of the responsibility that comes with directing such a storied series while also expressing excitement about the opportunity, “I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.”

Since Amazon MGM took creative control of the Bond franchise in February, they have worked swiftly to initiate development of the next film. The studio's goal includes winning the trust of fans who may be skeptical about new corporate leadership and concerned about potential spinoffs.

Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, praised Villeneuve’s appointment, stating, “James Bond is in the hands of one of today’s greatest filmmakers.” The collaboration of Pascal and Heyman as producers alongside Villeneuve presents a strong creative foundation for the forthcoming Bond film. Villeneuve emerged as the preferred choice over a competitive list of directors that included Edward Berger (“Conclave”), Paul King (“Paddington 2”), Edgar Wright (“Baby Driver”), and Jonathan Nolan, known for co-creating “Westworld” and being Christopher Nolan’s brother.

The producers echoed Villeneuve’s passion for the franchise, asserting, “Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy. It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it’s ours, too.”

As of now, no official release date has been announced for the next Bond film. Villeneuve is scheduled to begin shooting the third installment of “Dune” this summer. If production on the Bond film commences next year, it is likely that the movie will hit theaters sometime in 2027.

Villeneuve’s first two “Dune” films have collectively exceeded $1 billion in worldwide box office earnings and received a total of 15 Academy Award nominations, winning seven. His prolific filmography also includes critically acclaimed titles such as “Blade Runner 2049,” “Arrival,” “Sicario,” “Prisoners,” “Enemy,” and “Incendies.”

In 2022, Amazon completed its acquisition of MGM Studios for $8.5 billion but did not gain creative control over MGM’s most valuable asset until this year. Historically, every director of a Bond film has been specifically selected by the Broccoli family, making Villeneuve’s appointment a notable change in the franchise's longstanding tradition.
