SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is facing challenges due to the unpopularity of his administration, which threatens his position as a frontrunner for reelection in the upcoming year. Critics within his government and external observers have pointed fingers at his wife, Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, for her outspoken nature, suggesting that she has overstepped traditional ceremonial boundaries.

Janja, a 58-year-old sociologist, has attracted negative attention for her controversial remarks about tech billionaire Elon Musk and for her input during significant events, like the January 8, 2023 riots in Brasilia. In spite of the criticism, she remains resolute in her intentions to speak out on matters she deems important, while Lula has actively defended her right to express her opinions, emphasizing that she represents a strong and independent voice.

During a diplomatic dinner in Beijing in early May, Lula celebrated a significant accomplishment: securing billions of dollars in investments alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping. However, Janja interrupted the event by addressing Xi about the challenges posed by Chinese social media platform TikTok, claiming its algorithm benefits right-wing content. This discourse quickly became public knowledge, suggesting that her comments may have overshadowed her husband's diplomatic success.

A recent poll conducted by Datafolha on June 12 revealed mixed sentiments about Janja's influence. Approximately 36% of Brazilians believe her actions negatively impact the government, while only 14% felt they were beneficial. The same poll indicated a 40% job disapproval rating for Lula, marking an eight-point increase since October 2024.

Concerns surrounding Janja's role are compounded by guidelines from the solicitor-general's office, which outline that the president's spouse is primarily expected to assume a "symbolically representative role" rather than act as a governmental spokesperson. Critics argue that Janja’s more vocal participation undermines the decorum associated with her position, and some within the political scene are wary that her presence could detract from Lula's image. Brazilian political scientist Beatriz Rey noted that Janja's refusal to adhere to traditional protocols sends a troubling message regarding respect for democratic institutions.

The Brazilian presidency has responded to such criticism, defending Janja's engagement as a reflection of her background and dedication to public issues. Lula's history with both his late wives has lent a personal element to his relationship with Janja, whom he met in 2017. Their subsequent marriage in 2022 has also led to further scrutiny over the dynamics within the Brazilian political landscape.

Many supporters within Lula's Workers' Party attribute some of the backlash against Janja to misinformation, attempting to bolster her image through social media campaigns such as "I am with Janja." Unfortunately, these efforts have not garnered the attention hoped for, with views failing to surpass 100,000 and engagement remaining minimal.

Despite this, some allies assert that Janja revitalizes Lula's image, and there is a general consensus that alienating her would be counterproductive. Yet, her tendency to overstep traditional boundaries may reflect poorly on her husband's presidency. Journalist Adriana Negreiros observed that Janja's active involvement in official events displays her desire to be both present and vocal, indicating an ongoing tension between her perceived role and expectations.

Janja firmly asserts that she will not play the role of a mere accompaniment to her husband at formal functions. In a podcast, she articulated her understanding of her limits, but she did express regret for previous outbursts, including comments directed at Elon Musk. As Lula's adversaries comment on her public persona, they suggest that her continued presence could play to the advantage of right-wing politics.

Overall, Janja is poised to engage actively in upcoming events, including the BRICS summit scheduled for July 6-7 in Rio. Lula has indicated his full support for her independence, asserting that she is entitled to voice her opinions and attend events of her choosing.
