ROME (AP) — A gas station explosion occurred early Friday in southeastern Rome, injuring at least 40 individuals, which includes 11 police officers and one firefighter. Fortunately, quick action by local authorities and rescuers helped prevent a more tragic outcome, the officials reported.

The explosion resonated across the Italian capital shortly after 8 a.m., creating a massive cloud of dark smoke and fire that was observable from various areas within the city. Rome's Mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, stated that local police and firefighters were dispatched to the location following a report of a gas leak. Upon their arrival, two additional explosions occurred, compounding the urgency of the situation.

In a quick response to the unfolding crisis, local police promptly evacuated a nearby sports center, along with other buildings situated across from the gas station. Gualtieri highlighted that these actions were crucial in averting a far graver tragedy. Among the injured, at least 24 residents were reported, with two individuals in “severe conditions” and receiving treatment at Rome’s Casilino hospital. The other injured included law enforcement personnel—both police and carabinieri—along with one firefighter. Thankfully, their injuries were not life-threatening.

A total of 15 firefighting teams immediately responded to the scene, working diligently to bring the fire under control. In the meantime, Rome prosecutors have launched an investigation into the explosion's cause, which may be linked to a prior gas leak during the unloading phase of liquefied petroleum gas at the station.

Thanks to local police's rapid evacuation of the sports center, several children were whisked to safety just in time to avoid the subsequent explosion. Fabio Balzani, the president of the sports center, acknowledged that the timing of the initial explosion was critical, as dozens of children were scheduled to arrive for summer camp just 30 minutes later. He expressed that had the explosions occurred at that time, it would have resulted in catastrophic consequences.

Residents described the first explosion's noise and force, likening it to an earthquake, as windows shattered and shutters were torn off nearby buildings. Barbara Belardinelli recounted her experience, mentioning that she and her daughter sustained minor injuries after venturing outside to investigate following the first blast. They were unfortunately caught in the second explosion, reacting to the intense heat and pressure from the subsequent fireball.

In an emotional response to the incident, Pope Leo XIV expressed his prayers for the victims, noting that the explosion took place “in the heart of my Diocese.” Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also acknowledged the situation, commending the rapid response efforts which successfully secured and closed off the affected area, suggesting that these actions significantly minimized the potential for greater tragedy.

As the situation unfolds, local authorities and emergency teams continue to assess the aftermath of the explosion and determine the challenges posed by the investigation. The community remains on alert as they process the impact of this alarming event in their midst.
