LONDON (AP) – In a significant firefighting effort, crews in Scotland tackled a large brush fire that erupted on Arthur’s Seat, a notable hill that overlooks the city of Edinburgh. The blaze, characterized by burning gorse bushes, sent thick plumes of smoke billowing into the sky, compelling emergency services to respond promptly.
The incident took place on Sunday, August 10, 2025, coinciding with the commencement of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, recognized as the world’s largest performance arts festival. Emergency personnel were alerted to the fire late Sunday afternoon, and firefighting teams worked tirelessly throughout the night and into the following day to bring the situation under control.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Group Commander Niall MacLennan reported that the fire impacted a broad area covered by gorse bushes, which are known for their thorny, evergreen characteristics. As of now, the exact cause of the blaze remains unknown. Rory Hadden, a fire science specialist from the engineering department at the University of Edinburgh, noted that a significant majority of fires in Scotland are linked to human activity. He highlighted that Arthur’s Seat attracted a substantial number of visitors on that day, which, combined with the notably dry conditions, created an ideal environment for a wildfire to ignite and spread rapidly.
Hadden further explained that wildfires in and around Arthur’s Seat are comparatively frequent, with this particular occurrence highlighting an upward trend in such incidents across the UK, attributed to changing climate conditions and land use practices. He remarked on a similar fire that occurred on Arthur’s Seat in 2019, during which firefighters battled a blaze for a duration of eight hours.
