Police in Peel Region are currently investigating an alleged hate-motivated incident involving the vandalism of an Islamic centre located in Mississauga. The centre in question is the Mississauga chapter of the Islamic Circle of North America.

On August 15, at an early hour, surveillance footage captured an individual utilizing a skateboard to smash the glass doors of the facility. The president of the centre, Minhaj Quershi, reported to media that the suspect had previously been seen loitering around the Islamic centre multiple times, exhibiting a friendly demeanor by waving at those present prior to the vandalism.

Quershi expressed the community's growing concern for their safety following the incident, stating, "They told us that they saw this person a number of times here on his skates, and even some people said they said hello to them." He emphasized that the act represents a hate crime fueled by Islamophobia, highlighting that prior to this event, the community had not experienced such hostility. "Now, the community feels very harassed... even the number of children not coming here for evening schools, for the morning Quran classes, they are afraid," he added.

In response to the incident, Peel Regional Police announced that their hate crime unit is involved in the investigation, given that an Islamic centre was specifically targeted. Sgt. Tyler Bell elaborated on the complexities involved in such investigations, stating, "These investigations are certainly difficult and complex, and following someone on camera is not actually an easy task. It does take a lot of work, a lot of effort to canvas and find those cameras." Although the footage provides a visual of the suspect, it does not reveal the individual’s identity.

Sgt. Bell also indicated that the findings of the investigation will dictate whether any additional charges will be applied. As it stands, police are categorizing the matter as hate-motivated mischief.

Furthermore, Peel Regional Police noted a concerning trend; while there has been an increase in acts categorized as hate crimes within the region, there has also been a corresponding rise in the willingness of individuals to report such incidents. This suggests a community taking steps to address the issue of hate and ensure their safety.
