Cardi B Wins Lawsuit Over Alleged Assault Claims

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cardi B achieved a decisive victory in a legal battle concerning a lawsuit brought by a security guard who accused her of assaulting her during a visit to a doctor’s office in Beverly Hills. The incident reportedly occurred in February 2018, when Cardi was four months pregnant with her first child.

A jury composed of six men and six women deliberated for approximately one hour before unanimously finding Cardi B not liable in the civil case. The security guard, Emani Ellis, alleged that Cardi cut her face with a fingernail and spat on her in the hallway of the obstetrician’s office. Only nine of the 12 jurors were needed for a verdict, underscoring the quick resolution of the matter.

Following the ruling, Cardi expressed her thoughts about the lawsuit outside the courthouse, vowing to counter-sue anyone who she believes files frivolous lawsuits against her. She emphasized her innocence, stating, “I am not that celeb that you sue, and you think is going to settle. I’m not gonna settle. Especially when I’m super completely innocent.” Cardi explained that the trial caused her to miss her children’s first day of school, and humorously mentioned the difficulties of frequent wig changes during the proceedings, which left her “forehead raw.”

During the trial, Cardi testified that she was concerned about the possibility of Ellis revealing her pregnancy to the public. While admitting that there had been an argument between them, she firmly denied any physical contact, insisting, “I will say it on my deathbed. I did not touch that woman.” The trial featured livestreamed testimony that garnered significant public attention, leading to numerous viral moments.

In a moment captured by the media, Cardi expressed her frustration during a lunch break when she was questioned about her pregnancy and the identity of the father. She labeled these inquiries as disrespectful. The trial resumed with closing arguments that drew attention to the emotional and professional impact the incident had on Ellis, who had ambitions of working in law enforcement but claimed that the encounter severely affected her future.

Ron Rosen Janfaza, Ellis’s attorney, argued that the incident led to Ellis losing her job and ultimately derailing her career aspirations. He contended that Ellis sustained trauma and no longer had the opportunity for advancement in her anticipated career path. Janfaza criticized Cardi for her use of profane language during her testimony, suggesting that it demonstrated a lack of respect for the proceedings.

Cardi shared details of her experiences leading up to the alleged incident, stating that she had been in Los Angeles for promotional work during the NBA All-Star Game. While privately acknowledging her pregnancy to close friends and family, Cardi had not made any public announcements at that time. The obstetrician’s office had been closed for other patients, enhancing her expectation of privacy.

Ellis, in her testimony, described feeling humiliated and traumatized by the encounter, particularly as a scar on her face necessitated cosmetic surgery. She sought damages for medical expenses, emotional distress, lost wages, and punitive damages, claiming a total of approximately $24 million against Cardi B. However, a receptionist who intervened during the argument lent credence to Cardi’s version of events, corroborating her account.

As it stands, the jury’s swift and unanimous decision effectively absolves Cardi B of the allegations, marking a significant legal victory for the rapper in this highly publicized case.
