Caitlin Clark, the star guard for the Indiana Fever, will miss the remainder of the 2023 WNBA season due to a right groin injury. In a heartfelt statement, Clark expressed her disappointment, stating, “I had hoped to share a better update, but I will not be returning to play this season. I spent hours in the gym every day with the singular goal of getting back out there; disappointed isn’t a big enough word to describe how I am feeling.” She conveyed her gratitude to fans and supporters during her recovery period, emphasizing the joy they brought her despite the frustrating circumstances.
Clark's injury occurred during a game against the Connecticut Sun on July 15, where she also sustained a bone bruise. In a commendable second season in the WNBA, the former Iowa standout averaged 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, and 5.0 rebounds over 13 games. Her absence is keenly felt, especially as the Fever aim for a playoff berth. “Caitlin has worked so hard throughout this time, doing everything possible to recover and return to the court, but ultimately, time is not on our side,” said Amber Cox, COO and GM of the Fever. Cox emphasized that Clark's long-term health and well-being remain their top priority, looking ahead to her full return for the start of the 2026 season.
Despite rigorous efforts to recuperate, including participating in full-court drills, Clark has not engaged in much contact practice, as stated by Fever coach Stephanie White. As of now, the Indiana Fever sits in eighth place in the league standings, holding a slim lead of one and a half games over the Los Angeles Sparks with only three games left in the season. The Fever have faced considerable challenges, losing five players to injuries, including Clark and fellow guards Sydney Colson (knee), Aari McDonald (foot), and Sophie Cunningham (knee), alongside forward Chloe Bibby (knee).
This season has been particularly trying for Clark, who also dealt with injuries to her left thigh and groin. It's worth noting that these injury issues are a first for her, as she never missed a game throughout her collegiate career at Iowa or during her rookie year in the WNBA. Recognizing her fighting spirit, NBA star LeBron James took to social media to uplift Clark with a message of encouragement: “Minor setback for a MAJOR COMEBACK!! Rest up, get healthy and be YOU!”
Even with Clark's limited playtime this season, she has made a substantial impact on the growth of women's basketball, as evidenced by record attendance figures across the league. The Indiana Fever, despite adversity and a rough season, remain focused on concluding the year with a strong finish and securing their place in the playoffs. As they navigate these final games, the team is determined to show resilience, drawing strength from Clark's contributions and the unwavering support of loyal fans.
