A member of the Canadian Armed Forces, Warrant Officer George Hohl, who was deployed to Latvia, has been found deceased. The Department of National Defence (DND) confirmed his death following a report of his disappearance on September 2, 2023. Hohl, who served as a vehicle technician and was stationed in Edmonton, was deployed under Operation Reassurance, part of the NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia.
According to DND, Warrant Officer Hohl was last seen in the town of Ādaži, Latvia. His body was discovered days later, on September 5. While the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, an investigation is currently underway. The Canadian Forces Military Police are collaborating with Latvian authorities to uncover the details of this tragic incident.
DND has stated that there is no indication that this incident poses an increased threat to the safety and security of other deployed members. This assurance comes as the military community processes the loss of a dedicated service member who had nearly two decades of service within the Canadian Armed Forces.
Warrant Officer Hohl had a distinguished career, having been deployed on several operations throughout his time in service. General Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff, expressed her condolences, highlighting Hohl's dedication and commitment over the years. She noted that his contributions to the Canadian Armed Forces will not be forgotten.
This incident has brought attention to the risks faced by military personnel deployed abroad, as well as the importance of mental health and community support within the military. The investigation into Warrant Officer Hohl's death is imperative not only for uncovering the facts but also for providing closure to his family, friends, and comrades.
