LISBON, Portugal (AP) — A preliminary investigative report released on Saturday regarding the tragic derailment of a popular streetcar in Lisbon reveals that a critical cable connecting the two cabins failed. This accident, which occurred on Wednesday, resulted in the loss of 16 lives and left 21 others injured. Officials deemed this incident to be one of the gravest tragedies the city has faced in recent memory.
The report, published by the Office for Air and Rail Accident Investigations, detailed that the two cabins of the Elevador da Gloria, a well-known funicular operating in the city, had traveled only about 6 meters (approximately 20 feet) before the cable that provides the balancing force snapped. The cabin positioned at the top of the hill rapidly descended, escalating into a catastrophic situation.
The document further stated that the cabin's brakeman acted swiftly by applying both the pneumatic brake and the hand brake in an attempt to halt the downward motion. However, these measures proved ineffective, as the cabin continued to accelerate down the slope despite the brakes being engaged.
Investigators on scene discovered that the connecting cable's failure was evident at the point where it attached to the cabin at the hilltop. The funicular, technically classified as a streetcar, operates using a system of steel cables, with one car descending to help pull the other car uphill. This system has a capacity to carry more than 40 passengers, both seated and standing, although it has yet to be determined how many individuals were on board during the accident.
The Elevador da Gloria has been in operation since 1914, serving as a popular transit option for both residents and tourists navigating the steep hills of downtown Lisbon. This incident marks a somber moment for the city, as it not only highlights the potential risks associated with such historical means of transportation but also brings to light the urgent need for thorough inspections and maintenance of aging infrastructure.
A comprehensive final report that includes detailed findings, analyses, and conclusions regarding the causes of this tragic derailment is expected to be released in the future. If completing the final report within one year proves unfeasible, an interim report will be made available to the public.
