Preparations are already underway to get Markham ready for the 2026 Honda Indy race, with initial changes being implemented at the Unionville GO station. The transition marks a significant shift for the Grand Prix of Toronto, which is moving from its traditional venue at Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto to a new location in the northeastern suburb of Markham.
Earlier in September, it was officially announced that the Grand Prix would be held later in the summer than usual, solidifying Markham's role as the host city for the next five years. This relocation represents a major change in the event's history and is expected to draw a substantial number of racing fans to the area.
One of the primary modifications involves the construction of a double pit lane in the parking lot of the Unionville GO station. Mayor Frank Scarpitti expressed excitement about this addition, highlighting that Indy fans arriving via GO transit will be let out right in the heart of the action, directly in front of the new double pit lanes. This development is part of a larger effort to enhance the experience for attendees, ensuring they have convenient access to the racing festivities.
However, these renovations come with some disruptions for daily commuters. Currently, 700 parking spaces have been closed off at the Unionville GO station to facilitate the construction. Mayor Scarpitti mentioned that this closure is expected to last about a month, which may pose challenges for regular transit users in the interim.
To alleviate the parking situation, alternative options are available for commuters. Overflow parking lots located east of the station can accommodate some vehicles, and additional spaces are also accessible at the Markham Pan Am Centre and the nearby YMCA. These adjustments aim to ensure that both racing fans and regular commuters can navigate the changes with minimal inconvenience.
The next Honda Indy race is scheduled to take place from August 14 to 16, 2026, making it a highly anticipated event for motorsport enthusiasts in the region. As the preparations continue, the local community and businesses are poised to benefit from the influx of visitors expected during the race weekend.
