UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Amid rising tensions between Russia and NATO powers, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov denied any intention to attack Europe, asserting that Russia would mount a "decisive response" to any acts of aggression. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Lavrov maintained a measured tone towards the United States following last month’s summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
While no agreements were reached to resolve Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine, Lavrov expressed "some hopes" for continued dialogue with Washington, interpreting the Trump administration as a pragmatic partner. He emphasized that it is Russia that is facing threats, arguing against the narrative that Russia has aggressive intentions towards NATO countries. "Russia has never had and does not have any such intentions," Lavrov stated, but he warned that any aggression against Russia would receive a strong response.
As Ukraine's war enters its fourth year, Trump suggested that Kyiv could potentially reclaim all territories lost to Russia, marking a significant shift from his previous stance that Ukraine might have to make territorial concessions. In a post-speech conference, Lavrov expressed Russia's appreciation for Trump’s meaning and emphasized the importance of avoiding confrontation in the interests of both nations. Lavrov reiterated this sentiment, acknowledging a willingness to engage in frank discussions to resolve existing issues. Despite this, Lavrov's rhetoric included sharp critiques of NATO and the West, reflecting persistent tensions in international relations.
During the General Assembly, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a passionate appeal for action against Russian aggression, stating that Ukraine represents only the first target in Russia's expansionist ambitions. As Russia offered various rationales for its military interventions, including the need for security from NATO’s eastward expansion, Ukraine and its Western allies have denounced Russia's actions as unjustified aggression.
