Hurricane Priscilla Brings Heavy Rain to Mexico Coast

MIAMI (AP) - Hurricane Priscilla has formed in the Pacific Ocean off the southwestern coast of Mexico, bringing significant rainfall and strong winds to coastal areas. According to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center, as of Sunday, October 5, 2025, Priscilla is characterized by maximum sustained winds reaching 75 mph (120 kph). The storm’s current location is approximately 285 miles (460 kilometers) south-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, and it is moving north-northwest at a speed of 3 mph (6 kph).

The hurricane is already affecting southwestern Mexico with heavy rainfall and gusty winds, leading to potential flash floods. The swells generated by Priscilla are impacting parts of the coast, and they are expected to reach various coastal areas in southwestern and western Mexico and southern Baja California by Monday. These swells pose serious risks, creating life-threatening surf and rip currents.

In light of the developing conditions, a tropical storm watch has been issued for portions of the southwestern coast of Mexico, specifically from Punta San Telmo to Punta Mita. Tropical storm conditions are anticipated in the area on Sunday and Monday, with rainfall estimates of up to 6 inches (15 centimeters) possible in several regions of Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco.

Meanwhile, another storm in the Pacific, named Octave, has also gained hurricane status but is not predicted to make landfall and has no coastal watches or warnings associated with it. As of the same day, Octave boasts top winds of approximately 80 mph (130 kph) and is located about 995 miles (1,600 kilometers) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. The National Hurricane Center notes that Octave is expected to gradually weaken by Monday and is currently moving northeast at 6 mph (9 kph).

Residents and authorities along affected coastal regions are advised to stay alert and monitor the situation, as the impacts from Hurricane Priscilla can lead to dangerous conditions and significant disruptions. Emergency preparedness and safety measures should be taken seriously, particularly given the forecasted heavy rainfall and wind speeds, which can contribute to hazardous flooding and complicate evacuation efforts if necessary.

As both hurricanes navigate the Pacific, updates from the National Hurricane Center will continue to provide critical information regarding their paths and potential impacts, enabling local populations to remain informed and ready to respond as required.
