George Springer, the star outfielder for the Toronto Blue Jays, is reportedly "feeling better" as the team prepares for a crucial Game 6 in the American League Championship Series against the Seattle Mariners. As of now, Seattle leads the best-of-seven series 3-2, placing significant pressure on the Blue Jays to perform well at their home stadium, Rogers Centre, on Sunday.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider provided an update on Springer's condition during a news conference held on Saturday prior to optional workouts. He stated that Springer is recovering rapidly from a contusion in his right knee, which he sustained when he was hit by a fastball thrown by Seattle reliever Bryan Woo during Game 5. The injury occurred in the top of the seventh inning when Springer was trying to help secure a lead against the Mariners, which eventually slipped away, resulting in a 6-2 loss for Toronto.
Schneider shared that a CT scan conducted on Springer came back negative, indicating that there is no serious injury. "Feeling better today. Just a contusion, as we say," he remarked, adding that Springer has been receiving treatment and is expected to engage in light activities as part of his recovery. Schneider expressed optimism about Springer's availability for the pivotal Game 6, noting that the sole requirement is for Springer to feel confident about his ability to play.
Given Springer's history of playing through injuries, Schneider also mentioned that he remains hopeful about the outfielder's toughness and ability to contribute to the team if given the green light. "George has played through a lot, probably more than you guys know this year," Schneider said. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the injury does not hinder Springer while swinging or running on the field.
In addition to Springer's situation, Schneider provided an update on all-star shortstop Bo Bichette, who has been sidelined from the Blue Jays' playoff roster due to a sprained left knee. Schneider indicated that Bichette has shown significant progress in his recovery, particularly with his running. While he has not yet been able to run the bases, he has been working on his swing and participated in outfield drills, which suggests a positive trajectory in his rehabilitation.
For Game 6, the Blue Jays have announced that rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage will take the mound, facing off against Seattle's Logan Gilbert. This matchup is critical for Toronto, as they strive to even the series and stay alive in the championship race.
George Springer, who has had a standout season at the age of 36, has posted impressive statistics including a batting average of .309, with 32 home runs and 84 runs batted in, along with 18 stolen bases and a .399 on-base percentage. His performance during the postseason has included a batting average of .256, with three home runs and six RBIs, displaying his capability to impact the game at crucial moments.
Bo Bichette had been enjoying a stellar season as well before his injury, with a .311 batting average, 18 home runs, 94 RBIs, and a .357 on-base percentage. He suffered his injury while sliding into home plate against the New York Yankees on September 6. While Bichette has missed the postseason thus far, Schneider mentioned the possibility of him being added to the roster if the team advances to the World Series.
