Strong Earthquakes Rattle Eastern Caribbean Islands

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) – A significant seismic event occurred on Monday, registering a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. This tremor was felt across numerous islands in the eastern Caribbean, as reported by various officials.

The earthquake struck approximately 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe at a depth of six miles (10 kilometers), according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The substantial depth and distance from land may have mitigated potential damage, as there were no immediate reports of destruction following the quake.

In the wake of the initial shock, a subsequent earthquake measuring 6.0 magnitude also hit the same region, occurring at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles). The proximity and similarity in magnitude of these events raised concerns among local populations, yet, notably, no tsunami warning was issued by the relevant authorities.

The tremors were experienced on a variety of islands throughout the eastern Caribbean, including destinations as remote as Antigua and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Residents in these areas reported feeling the vibrations, prompting a sense of alertness but, fortunately, no reports of casualties or property damage were documented immediately after the seismic activity.

Officials continue to monitor the geological situation in the region, maintaining vigilance for any aftershocks or further seismic developments that may arise. The USGS typically advises individuals to be prepared for the unexpected nature of seismic activity, particularly in areas that are prone to earthquakes.

This event is a reminder of the tectonic dynamics of the Caribbean region, where various fault lines can lead to significant seismic occurrences. While the immediate impact has been relatively minor, the sensation of such quakes can disrupt daily life and prompt safety concerns among residents and tourists alike.
