Toronto Hydro has announced that it aims to restore power to customers in the Moss Park area by Thursday morning, following an outage that began more than 24 hours prior. The outage, reported at 8:11 a.m. on Wednesday, has affected almost 600 customers due to an underground cable fault attributed to external construction activities.
According to Toronto Hydro, the cable fault leading to the outage appears to have been caused by a suspected third-party dig-in at an active construction site nearby. The utility clarified that this construction work is unrelated to Toronto Hydro's operations but has resulted in damage to their infrastructure.
In a follow-up update, the utility described the repair operations as “complex and time-consuming,” emphasizing the challenges involved in locating and fixing the damaged infrastructure. The process includes safely identifying the fault, conducting repairs, and performing tests before the system can be restored to service.
Toronto Hydro stated that while it anticipates having service restored around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, this timeline should be viewed as an estimate due to the unpredictable nature of such repairs. The utility acknowledged the difficulties caused by the extended outage and expressed gratitude for the patience of the affected customers.
The outage impacts a region defined by Queen Street East to Front Street East, and from Jarvis Street eastward to Parliament Street, highlighting the significant area affected by this infrastructure failure.
