Former NFL star Antonio Brown has been arrested on an attempted murder charge following a shooting incident that occurred after a celebrity boxing event in Miami. Miami police confirmed the arrest on Thursday, revealing that Brown, who is 37 years old, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals while in Dubai.
Subsequently, Brown was flown to Essex County, New Jersey, where he is currently being held as he awaits extradition to Miami, according to Miami police spokesman Mike Vega. The reasons behind his transfer to New Jersey and the duration of his stay in Dubai remain unclear, although he has been active on social media from that location in recent months.
Details from an arrest warrant issued for Brown outline the events of the incident, which took place on May 16. It is alleged that Brown got into a fistfight with a man identified as Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu after the boxing match. Following the altercation, Brown reportedly seized a handgun from a member of the security staff and discharged two shots at Nantambu, with one of the bullets grazing the victim's neck.
The court documents do not clarify whether Brown has legal representation. Additionally, it is uncertain when he will be returned to Miami to face the charges against him. The attempted murder charge is classified as second-degree, which carries a potential maximum sentence of 15 years in prison along with a fine that could reach up to $10,000 if convicted.
Antonio Brown had a distinguished career in the NFL, spanning 12 years where he was recognized as an All-Pro wide receiver. He spent the majority of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and last played professionally for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. Over his career, he recorded 928 receptions for more than 12,000 yards and achieved 83 touchdowns.
However, Brown's career has been marred by numerous legal troubles over the years. He has faced allegations including the battery of a moving truck driver, multiple domestic violence charges, failure to pay child support, and other incidents. A notable moment in his downfall occurred during a game in 2021 when he infamously tore off his jersey, shoulder pads, and gloves, running off the field. This incident led to his release from the Buccaneers and effectively marked the end of his professional football career.
As the situation unfolds, many are observing how this situation will further impact Brown's life after football and what the legal proceedings in Miami will yield. The former NFL player has proven to be a controversial figure, and this latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges he has faced outside of his athletic achievements.
