Antonio Brown Released on Bail Amid Attempted Murder Charge

Former NFL star wide receiver Antonio Brown, 37, is facing serious legal troubles as he was ordered to be released on a $25,000 bail by a judge in Florida. As part of his bail conditions, he must wear a GPS ankle monitor. Brown is currently charged with second-degree attempted murder, a crime that could carry a prison sentence of up to 15 years as well as a fine of $10,000 if convicted. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and his attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, announced that Brown will remain at his home in Broward County, Florida, while the legal proceedings take their course.

During the bond hearing, which took place via video, Brown appeared wearing a red jail shirt and only replied to direct questions from the judge, Mindy Glazer. The prosecution had requested pretrial detention, claiming that Brown, as a financially successful former athlete, poses a flight risk due to his resources. However, his attorney argued that Brown no longer possesses a passport and intends to live at home during this period. Eiglarsh expressed eagerness to defend Brown zealously throughout the case.

Online jail records indicated that Brown remained in custody late Wednesday afternoon. His attorney clarified that the timing of Brown’s release is uncertain due to logistical issues with processing his ankle monitor and other arrangements. According to an arrest warrant, the incident at the center of the charges occurred on May 16 in Miami, following a celebrity boxing match. Brown is accused of taking a handgun from a security staffer and firing two shots at Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, a man with whom he had previously been in a fistfight. Reports suggest that one of the bullets grazed Nantambu's neck.

Eiglarsh maintained that the affidavit is incorrect, asserting that Brown used his own firearm and that the shots were not aimed at anyone specifically. The attorney described the altercation, explaining that Brown was allegedly defending himself from multiple individuals who attempted to rob him and inflict physical harm. According to social media posts, Brown had been living in Dubai for several months prior to the incident and had business interests in the region.

Brown's defense lawyer emphasized that contrary to some implications, Brown did not flee to Dubai to escape the charges; he had always intended to return to address the allegations. Antonio Brown previously had a celebrated career in the NFL, playing as an All-Pro wide receiver over 12 years. While he spent most of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he last played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. In total, Brown recorded an impressive 928 receptions for over 12,000 yards and contributed to 88 total touchdowns, including punt returns.
