NAKHON PATHOM, Thailand (AP) – A unique dining phenomenon is taking place in central Thailand, where a restaurant is offering customers the experience of eating meals while sitting in floodwaters, surrounded by live fish. The Pa Jit restaurant, located in Nakhon Pathom province, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from Bangkok, has transformed into a popular attraction since the Tha Chin River breached its banks 11 days ago. This unusual restaurant setting has earned considerable attention on social media, prompting families to flock to the site for a memorable dining experience.
Families have been enjoying lunches at Pa Jit, with children mesmerized by the fish swimming near their legs. The wait staff, equipped with waders, navigates through the shallow waters to serve dishes including fish soup and chicken noodles. This restaurant has been a riverside staple for over 30 years, and owner Pornkamol Prangprempree recalled the heartbreak she felt during the last major flood four years ago, when she feared that there would be no customers. However, that flood led to a surge in popularity when a customer shared photos online, showcasing the fish in the water. This viral moment revitalized her business, which now sees profits doubling from around 10,000 baht ($309) to approximately 20,000 baht ($618) per day.
Visitors like Chomphunuth Khantaniti, 29, who came with her husband and son, express delight at the unique opportunity. She mentioned that the experience of seeing fish helps keep children entertained and engaged. Bella Windy, 63, also visited Pa Jit specifically to feel the fish nibble at her feet. The natural ambiance created by the flooded restaurant is described by patrons as the restaurant's highlight, drawing in more customers eager to experience this uncommon way of dining.
Despite the business boon for Pa Jit, it is essential to note that many other regions in Thailand have been severely impacted by flooding. Since late July, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has reported that the floods have claimed the lives of 12 individuals and left two missing. Affected areas include 13 provinces, primarily in the northern and central regions of Thailand, with more than 480,000 people currently feeling the devastating effects of the floods.
As the monsoon season persists along with high tidal activity, Pa Jit restaurant anticipates a continued inundation for several more weeks. While the unique experience offered by the flooding has drawn customers to dine in the water, the overall situation remains dire for many others in the country suffering from the severe flooding conditions.
