Paul Costelloe, the renowned Irish-American fashion designer, has passed away at the age of 80, as confirmed by his company. Costelloe, who notably dressed the late Princess Diana, was a prominent figure in the London fashion scene, celebrated for his luxurious styles and intricate designs. His death was attributed to a short illness, and he was surrounded by his wife and seven children when he passed peacefully in London.

Born in Dublin in 1945, Costelloe came from a family rooted in the tailoring profession; his father worked in a factory producing raincoats in the Rathmines district. He began his formal education in fashion at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture fashion school in Paris, where he was profoundly influenced by the works of contemporary designers such as Emanuel Ungaro and Pierre Cardin. This exposure, combined with his academic training, helped him carve a niche for himself in the fashion industry.

Costelloe’s career commenced as an assistant to designer Jacques Esterel in Paris. He then shifted his focus to Milan, working for the British retailer Marks & Spencer in an attempt to break into the Italian market. Although this venture was ultimately unsuccessful, Costelloe remained in Milan to design for La Rinascente, a luxury department store, enhancing his reputation in high fashion.

Later, Costelloe made his way to the United States, where he contributed his talents as a designer for the Anne Fogarty label. Eventually, he established his own fashion house, which expanded to include a diverse array of offerings: womenswear, menswear, bags, and accessories, all marked by a signature style that focused on craftsmanship and rich fabrics.

In 1983, Costelloe’s career took an iconic turn when he was appointed as the personal designer to Princess Diana. This collaboration lasted until her untimely death in 1997 and cemented his status in the fashion industry. The connection originated when one of Diana’s ladies-in-waiting took notice of Costelloe’s work and facilitated an introduction, which the designer later reflected upon as a pivotal moment in his life. He fondly remembered looking out at Hyde Park during their meeting and acknowledging that he had indeed made it as a designer.
