Mamdani, a democratic socialist, and Trump, a Republican, have exchanged severe criticisms in the past. Following Mamdani's electoral victory, Trump labeled him a "100% Communist Lunatic" in a social media post. Conversely, Mamdani has accused Trump of undermining democracy. Despite their differing ideologies, both emerged smiling and discussed shared goals post-meeting, suggesting a willingness to find common ground.
In a "Meet the Press" interview conducted on Saturday, Mamdani was pressed about his past description of Trump as a despot and a fascist. He maintained his stance, stating, "Everything that I’ve said in the past, I continue to believe." He emphasized the importance of honesty in politics, saying, "We don’t shy away from where we have disagreements, but we understand what it is that brings us to that table." Mamdani clarified that his intent in visiting the Oval Office was not to confront or score points, but to advocate for the needs of New Yorkers.
During the meeting, Trump appeared to dismiss Mamdani's previous accusations. When a reporter inquired whether Mamdani still stood by his claims that Trump is a fascist, Trump interjected, suggesting that Mamdani could simply say yes to avoid further explanation.
