PARAMARIBO, Suriname (AP) — A tragic knife attack occurred outside the capital city of Paramaribo, resulting in the deaths of at least nine individuals, including five children, as reported by local police on Sunday. This devastating incident highlights a shocking escalation of violence in the usually peaceful nation.

The victims comprised four of the assailant's children, alongside several neighbors who attempted to intervene during the attack. Authorities indicated that the victims were found in various homes in the vicinity of Richelieu, located in the Commewijne district, approximately 25 kilometers (15 miles) east of Paramaribo.

Witness accounts describe that the horrifying events unfolded following a heated argument over the phone between the suspect, a 43-year-old male, and his estranged wife. Reports indicated that the confrontation escalated when the suspect's wife mentioned she would not pick up their children but would send someone else in her place. This reportedly triggered a violent outburst from the suspect, who armed himself with a knife and attacked his children before turning on neighbors who rushed to help.

In the aftermath of the attack, the Suriname Police Corps issued a statement detailing the events. According to their reports, the assailant not only attacked the children and neighbors but also attempted to assault police officers who arrived at the scene. The suspect sustained injuries during his arrest and is currently recovering in a hospital.

In addition to the fatalities, police confirmed that another adult and a sixth child were critically injured and are receiving medical care at a hospital in Paramaribo. The severity of these injuries raises concerns about the broader impact of such a violent episode on the community.

In response to the incident, Surinamese President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons expressed her condolences through a post on Facebook. She described the loss of life, particularly that of children, as a profound tragedy and offered her thoughts to those grieving in this unimaginably difficult time. The President's remarks were made in Dutch, the official language of Suriname, which underscores the somber nature of the situation.

Suriname, which is the smallest independent nation in South America and a former Dutch colony, has a population of approximately 600,000 people. Historically, it has maintained one of the lowest murder rates in the region. However, alarming data from the think tank Insight Crime indicates that the murder rate spiked significantly in 2024, reaching 30 homicides per 100,000 residents, which draws attention to a worrisome trend of increasing violence in the country.

This horrific knife attack marks a stark contrast to Suriname's usual atmosphere of safety and tranquility, leading to broader discussions about the underlying causes of the violence, mental health issues, and the implications for community safety in the wake of such tragedies. The emotional toll on the families involved and the community at large will likely be significant as they process the shocking events and seek healing in the days ahead.
