LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) – A significant incident involving heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has drawn attention following a deadly car crash that occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025. The crash resulted in the tragic loss of two of Joshua's friends, Sina Ghami and Latif "Latz" Ayodele. In the aftermath, police have charged the driver responsible for the crash, identified as Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46.

Kayode faces multiple serious charges, including dangerous and reckless driving, which were announced by police spokesman Oluseyi Babaseyi on Friday. The crash took place on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a key route linking Ogun state to the bustling city of Lagos. According to reports, the vehicle carrying Joshua and his friends collided with a stationary truck on this highway, leading to devastating consequences.

Following the incident, Kayode was taken into custody on Thursday after spending time in the hospital for his injuries. He has since been granted bail set at 5 million naira (approximately $3,480). However, he must meet certain bail conditions before being released fully. The police spokesman confirmed that Kayode has been charged with four counts, which include dangerous driving resulting in death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without the proper care, and operating a vehicle without a valid national driver's license.

As for the court proceedings, the case has been adjourned to January 20 for trial. Current details indicate that Kayode is being held in remand until the bail conditions are met. Meanwhile, Anthony Joshua himself was reported to have sustained minor injuries in the crash and was released from the hospital on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. Medical professionals deemed him fit for discharge, allowing him to recuperate at home.

Joshua, a prominent figure in the boxing world and a two-time heavyweight champion, has deep familial ties to Nigeria, having spent part of his childhood in the country attending boarding school. Joshua holds Nigerian nationality and frequently expresses pride in his heritage. His promoter, Matchroom Boxing, confirmed on Thursday that Joshua will remain in Nigeria during this challenging time, raising concerns about road safety within the country in light of the incident.

This tragic accident has not only caused personal loss for Joshua but has also brought to public attention the broader issues of road safety in Nigeria. The circumstances surrounding the crash, including the charges against Kayode, are likely to prompt discussions on regulations and the enforcement of traffic laws within the region.
