An emerging star from Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) is making his way to Major League Baseball (MLB) as Kazuma Okamoto has reached an agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays. At 29 years old, Okamoto has made a considerable impact in Japanese baseball, playing for the Yomiuri Giants over the past 11 seasons. During this time, he has hit a total of 248 home runs. Notably, Okamoto has consistently demonstrated his power at the plate, crossing the 30-homer threshold in six consecutive seasons from 2018 to 2023. His exceptional performance peaked in 2023 when he achieved a career-high of 41 home runs.
In addition to his home run prowess, Okamoto is a six-time NPB All-Star, further illustrating his status as one of Japan’s top players. His 2024 season saw him hit 27 home runs; however, he faced challenges in 2025 when an elbow injury sidelined him for nearly half of the season. Despite this setback, he maintained an impressive .327 batting average and recorded a 1.014 OPS, along with 15 home runs and 51 RBIs over 77 games.
Okamoto first captured the attention of North American baseball fans during the 2023 World Baseball Classic championship game. In a pivotal moment, he homered off USA pitcher Kyle Freeland in the fourth inning, contributing to Japan's 3-2 victory. This performance showcased Okamoto’s potential on an international stage prior to his MLB debut.
As he transitions to the MLB, Okamoto’s formidable bat and strong plate discipline position him well to contribute positively to the Blue Jays' offense. Will Sammon from The Athletic noted that while Okamoto is primarily recognized as a corner infielder—where he exclusively played for the Giants last season—his versatility to play left field enhances his fit within the Blue Jays’ lineup.
In 2024, Okamoto played in 15 games in the outfield, adding another layer of utility to his game. The Blue Jays will need to navigate the posting system to secure his services, which involves compensating the Giants. Under this system, the team will receive a fee structured as follows: 20 percent of the first $25 million of Okamoto’s contract, 17.5 percent of the next $25 million, and 15 percent of any amount exceeding $50 million.
