On Sunday, several downtown road closures will be in effect due to the 25th edition of the Sporting Life 10K, which is expected to attract thousands of runners. The event, which aims to raise funds for Campfire Circle—a charity dedicated to supporting children with cancer or serious illnesses and their families—will have a considerable impact on traffic in the downtown area.
Starting at 4 a.m., Yonge Street will be closed between Lawrence Avenue and Davisville Avenue, and this closure will remain in place until 11:30 a.m. Additionally, Lake Shore Boulevard West will experience closures from 4 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. between British Columbia Avenue and Bathurst Street. Furthermore, Strachan Avenue and Fort York Boulevard will be closed between Fleet Street and Lake Shore Boulevard West during the same time frame.
As the morning progresses, the road closures will intensify. From 6:30 a.m. to noon, Yonge Street will also be closed between Davisville Avenue and Wellington Street West. Meanwhile, the westbound lanes of Lake Shore Boulevard West will be shut down between Yonge and Bathurst Streets. In addition, Wellington Street West will be closed between Yonge and Bay Streets, and Bay Street will face closures between Wellington Street West and Lake Shore Boulevard West.
The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has announced that more than a dozen bus and streetcar routes will be affected due to these various road closures. Commuters in the area are advised to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid delays and disruptions.
The Sporting Life 10K is set to commence at 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Yonge and Davisville. Runners will first head south to Wellington Street, then west to Bay Street, before continuing south to Lake Shore Boulevard. The race will conclude at Exhibition Place and Ontario Place, with an anticipated finish time around 11:30 a.m.
Officials have indicated that road closures will be lifted by noon, allowing traffic to return to normal by early afternoon. The event has successfully raised over $27 million since its inception, supporting essential year-round programs for children facing serious health challenges.
As the race draws near, the community is gearing up to show their support for the participants and the cause they are rallying behind. This annual event not only promotes fitness and community engagement but also highlights the importance of charitable efforts in aiding those in need.
