Stolarz's Status Uncertain Ahead of Game 4 Showdown

As the Toronto Maple Leafs prepare for Game 4 against the Florida Panthers on Sunday, there remains uncertainty regarding the status of goaltender Anthony Stolarz. Head coach Craig Berube addressed the media on Saturday morning, following the Maple Leafs' narrow 5-4 overtime loss in Game 3. He indicated that Stolarz has made some progress from the injury he sustained during the second-round series opener but has yet to resume skating.

An injury update revealed that Stolarz left the Maple Leafs' Game 1 victory, which took place on Monday, midway through the second period. He suffered a blow to the head from Panthers forward Sam Bennett, a hit that occurred shortly after Stolarz had already taken a shot to the head earlier in the match. This unfortunate turn of events led the 31-year-old netminder to exit the game, shortly after which he vomited on the bench before being taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

The incident left the team and its fans concerned, especially given Stolarz's vital role in the playoffs so far. Notably, Bennett was not penalized by the NHL's player safety department for this incident, raising eyebrows about the league's handling of the situation.

Despite his injury, Stolarz did rejoin his teammates for practice on Tuesday; however, he did not travel to Florida for Games 3 and 4 of the series. Prior to his injury, Stolarz had provided a solid performance for the Maple Leafs in the playoffs, posting a goals-against average (GAA) of 2.19, a save percentage of .901, and a 4-2 record through his seven appearances in the postseason.

In Stolarz’s absence, Joseph Woll has stepped into the role of starter for the Maple Leafs. The 26-year-old goaltender has made two starts across three games, recording a GAA of 2.51 and a save percentage of .910. His performance will be crucial as Toronto aims to take a commanding 3-1 series lead against the Panthers.

The upcoming Game 4 is scheduled to take place on Sunday with a puck drop at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT. Fans can catch the action on Sportsnet or Sportsnet+ as Toronto looks to bounce back and gain an advantage in the series despite the uncertainty surrounding their goaltending situation.
