Quebec's forest fire prevention agency, SOPFEU, is taking proactive measures by deploying reinforcements to assist in combating several forest and brush fires currently affecting Ontario and Saskatchewan. This decision comes as the agency assesses the situation in Quebec as stable, allowing resources to be allocated to neighboring provinces in need.
Specifically, SOPFEU is sending two CL-415 firefighting aircraft along with their crews to Dryden, Ontario, and another two of the same aircraft to Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. These aircraft are recognized for their effectiveness in aerial firefighting and will play a crucial role in the ongoing efforts to manage the wildfires in these regions. The agency confirmed that the teams departed from Quebec City on Sunday.
As of Sunday, Ontario was experiencing six active fires across the province. Noteworthy among these was a fire located in Haliburton, approximately 170 kilometers north of Oshawa. This information was sourced from the Ministry of Natural Resources’ interactive map, which actively tracks wildfire incidents in the province.
Meanwhile, Saskatchewan is grappling with a more severe situation, as reported by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Public Safety. There were 18 active wildfires burning in the province on Sunday, contributing to a total of 142 wildfires that have occurred since the beginning of the fire season on April 1. The significant number of ongoing fires highlights the extensive challenges faced by fire management teams in Saskatchewan.
On the home front, SOPFEU has reported responding to 59 fires within Quebec since the start of the season, which have devastated approximately 38.7 hectares of forest. The agency has recently issued warnings to residents in the western part of Quebec, indicating that the fire index level in that region is classified as high to very high. This is a critical advisory, as it highlights the increased risk of wildfires and the necessity for heightened awareness among the local population.
