Weston Lions Area, originally scheduled to close at the end of March, is set to undergo revitalization following a collaborative agreement between the City of Toronto, the provincial government, and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE). This initiative was announced by York South-Weston Councillor Francis Nunziata on Monday.
As part of the revitalization efforts, the new arena will include a renewed ice pad and a “full sports-based program” that will be established adjacent to the arena. Councillor Nunziata emphasized that ongoing discussions are taking place with Premier Doug Ford and MLSE's CEO, Keith Pelley, to create a “made-in-Weston solution,” under the support of Mayor Olivia Chow.
Nunziata's statement highlighted that work will proceed over the coming months to finalize a design for the site. This careful planning aims to ensure that the city-owned facility meets the evolving needs of the community in the future. The discussions reflect a commitment to providing local residents with recreational opportunities and a space that aligns with community priorities.
Premier Doug Ford, who acknowledged the impending announcement, preferred to keep the details under wraps, underscoring the positive impact this project will have on the community. Ford expressed appreciation for the collaborative effort put forth by MPP Mohammed Farin, Councillor Nunziata, Mayor Chow, and Keith Pelley from MLSE, indicating that teamwork is essential for successful outcomes.
The Weston Lions Area rink, built 77 years ago, was initially slated to be replaced by an MLSE launchpad facility following a City Council decision to close the arena in November 2025. However, community members rallied to keep the rink open, forming a petition that garnered over 16,000 signatures prior to the announcement on Monday. This strong grassroots support highlighted the rink's importance to local residents, particularly the 1,200 individuals who utilize the ice weekly.
In summary, the revitalization of the Weston Lions Area signifies a crucial investment in community infrastructure. Through the cooperation of government officials and sports organizations, a solution has been identified that promises to maintain and enhance recreational opportunities for residents in the area.
