TORONTO – Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, a Canadian actor and filmmaker, has announced that she is returning her Toronto Film Critics Association (TFCA) Award. This decision comes after a portion of her acceptance speech expressing support for Palestine was cut during the award ceremony. Tailfeathers won the award for outstanding supporting performance in a Canadian film for her role in Melanie Oates’ drama “Sweet Angel Baby.”
TFCA president Johanna Schneller stated that the speech was edited for length, a decision made to maintain the event's timing. Tailfeathers, however, did not accept this explanation, arguing that the removal of her comments was a deliberate act of censorship. She sent in her acceptance speech via video as she was unable to attend the gala on Monday night.
In an email to the TFCA, which was shared with The Canadian Press, Tailfeathers explained that the cut portion of her speech was only two sentences long. In those sentences, she had mentioned the ongoing conflict in Palestine, highlighting her feelings about the situation. She stated, “When we were shooting ‘Sweet Angel Baby,’ October 7th happened and it changed everything. I just want to say that my heart continues to be with the people of Palestine who are experiencing this ongoing genocide and thank you to anyone in this industry who’s been brave enough to say anything.”
Following Tailfeathers' announcement, several TFCA members took to social media to announce their resignations in protest of the organization's decision. Critics Adam Nayman, Saffron Maeve, and Sarah-Tai Black were among those who stepped down, as confirmed by film writer Radheyan Simonpillai.
In her email, Tailfeathers expressed a strong stance against censorship. She emphasized her refusal to be silenced regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict. Tailfeathers also conveyed her empathy towards the Jewish community, condemning antisemitic violence, and urging for an end to Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian hatred. She articulated, “If we aim to rid this world of antisemitism, so too must we rid this world of Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian hate.”
Additionally, Tailfeathers recognized the risks taken by members of the Jewish community who speak out against the actions of the Israeli state. She expressed her support for these individuals, stating, “You are brave and your actions do not go unnoticed.” To her Palestinian colleagues, particularly artists and filmmakers, she quoted Fatima Hassouna: “I put my soul in my hand and walk with you.”
The recent Israeli military operations in Gaza were triggered by the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people in Israel and the kidnapping of over 250 others. Israeli counter-offensives have since reportedly caused the deaths of more than 72,000 individuals in Gaza, with the Gaza Health Ministry, under Hamas governance, providing casualty figures that are deemed reliable by various UN agencies and independent experts.
This incident has underscored the tensions surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict and highlights the challenges faced by individuals in the entertainment industry who speak out on sensitive geopolitical issues.
