Chesney the kangaroo made headlines recently for escaping from Sunshine Farm, a petting zoo in Necedah, Wisconsin. The incident began when a pack of stray dogs startled the young kangaroo, prompting him to leap over an eight-foot fence. Chesney's adventure lasted three days, leaving his keeper, Debbie Marland, frantic and the local community engaged in a search effort that concluded with a happy ending.
The escape occurred around 11:15 a.m. on a Wednesday, and Chesney stayed within a three-mile radius of the farm. Marland and a team of volunteers chased down reported sightings of the kangaroo, even employing heat-seeking drones to aid their search. Colton Johnson, owner of Midwest Aerial Drone Services, utilized his expertise in tracking lost pets to locate Chesney, describing the kangaroo’s heat signature as reminiscent of "a dinosaur running through the woods." Despite initial sightings, Chesney managed to evade capture multiple times, including a daring leap into a cold river.
On the following Friday, after an entire day without any confirmed sightings, searchers feared that Chesney might have wandered farther into less familiar territories. However, that evening, he was spotted nestled beneath a tree in a wooded area. Although a group of searchers surrounded him, the swift marsupial dashed away, continuing to frustrate the efforts to bring him home.
Marland returned to the search area the next morning with Chesney’s favorite treats and items bearing the scents of both Chesney and his companion, Kenny. As they began to lose hope and started to pack up, the team serendipitously spotted Chesney approaching them. Stacy Brereton, a friend of Marland who regularly assists at the farm, employed a calm approach, sitting quietly and allowing Chesney to come to her, which ultimately led to his recovery.
Chesney, who weighs about 40 pounds (18 kilograms), had a tense yet safe reunion with his roommate Kenny. While he appeared hungry and exhausted after his escapades, he was deemed healthy and scheduled for a veterinarian checkup shortly thereafter. Marland noted that the entire community banded together during the search, shaping Chesney into a local celebrity. In homage to his adventure, a fan of Sunshine Farm is working on a children’s book capturing the tale of Chesney's escapade, with hopes of selling it to help cover the search costs.
To prevent similar incidents in the future, Marland is planning to install a new mesh top over the kangaroo enclosure at Sunshine Farm. The unique situation not only showcased the community’s solidarity but also emphasized the unexpected lengths to which people will go to protect beloved animals.
