"Heightened Security for Jewish Community During Passover"

As Passover approaches, police in the Greater Toronto Area are taking proactive measures by increasing patrols around Jewish places of worship and community gathering spaces. This significant Jewish holiday is set to commence at sundown on Wednesday and will be observed until the following Thursday.

Toronto police have announced that residents can expect to see a heightened police presence not only around synagogues but also in residential neighborhoods and grocery stores throughout the week. Along with general increased patrols, the police will establish rotating command posts at several key locations, including synagogues, Baycrest Hospital, the Ledbury Jewish Centre, and specific intersections along Bathurst Street, particularly north of the city center.

In addition to Toronto's measures, York Regional Police have also committed to increasing patrols during Passover. They plan to set up command posts at two Jewish community centers and a Thornhill mall. Residents in York Region may notice a stronger police presence near places of worship, community gathering spaces, and within their neighborhoods as a precautionary step during the holiday.

The decision to bolster police presence comes amid growing concerns for the safety of Jewish individuals in Ontario. Premier Doug Ford has acknowledged these concerns in a social media video, reaffirming his government's commitment to combatting antisemitism and ensuring the safety of Jewish communities and their places of worship.

This increase in safety measures follows a worrying incident from last month, where police in both Toronto and York Region investigated reports of shots fired at three synagogues in the Greater Toronto Area. Fortunately, while the shootings resulted in damage to buildings, no injuries were reported. The alarming news sparked widespread condemnation from political representatives at all levels of government.

In response to the incidents, the federal government allocated $10 million to aid Jewish communities in enhancing security at their gathering places, reflecting the seriousness of the situation and the need for increased safety measures. As communities prepare to gather for Passover, the enhanced police presence aims to reassure Jewish individuals and provide them with a secure environment to observe this important holiday.
