IQALUIT – Elections Canada has officially confirmed that NDP incumbent Lori Idlout has emerged victorious in the Nunavut riding, defeating Liberal challenger Kilikvak Kabloona. The results were made public on Elections Canada’s website on Friday evening, following a thorough vote validation process that the federal agency undertook.

This validation process involved a meticulous double-checking of the vote counts that were initially reported during the night of the federal election held on April 28. In the original tally, Idlout was declared the winner by an unofficial margin of 77 votes. However, the final validation revealed that this margin has decreased to just 41 votes, underscoring the tight contest between the candidates.

The extended duration of two weeks required for the validation process was primarily attributed to delays experienced with the final ballot box from the community of Naujaat. The ballot box had been held up at an airport due to a significant blizzard, causing interruptions in the normal voting tally procedures.

As of Saturday, the current composition of the House of Commons shows the Liberal Party holding 170 seats, just two seats short of a majority government. The Conservative Party follows with 143 seats, and the Bloc Québécois holds 22 seats. The New Democratic Party (NDP) has 7 seats, while the Green Party retains a single seat in the Parliament.

This report was first published on May 17, 2025. Elections Canada’s confirmation of Idlout’s victory solidifies her position as a representative for the Nunavut riding, reflecting the political sentiments of the constituents during this election cycle.
